July 15, 1975, marked a historic milestone in space exploration as the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz-19 and the American Apollo launched simultaneously from Baikonur Cosmodrome and Cape Canaveral, respectively. This groundbreaking mission, known as the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), carried Soviet cosmonauts Alexey Leonov and Valery Kubasov, while the Apollo crew consisted of Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton.

For the first time in history, representatives of two nations embarked on a joint space mission. At 7:00 PM Moscow time on July 17, the two spacecraft successfully docked in Earth’s orbit, bringing together cosmonauts and astronauts in a moment of unprecedented cooperation.

The legendary handshake in space between mission commanders Alexey Leonov and Thomas Stafford was broadcast live worldwide, becoming a powerful symbol of the thaw in Soviet-American relations.
