Soviet officer Alexei Berest, the commander of the fighters who hoisted the Banner of Victory over the Reichstag is finally and officially a hero of the Russian federation. For courage, bravery and dedication shown in the fight against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, to be awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation,” the message behind the decision to reward him posthumously explains.
In May 1945, Berest commanded a group that included Mikhail Egorov and Meliton Kantaria, who hoisted the Banner of Victory over the Reichstag. These men were in one of the most iconic photos in human history as they raised the banner. Mr. Berest was nominated for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, but was only awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
