The Assam State ( Eastern India) Chapter of the Youth Wing of the International Russophile Movement (IRM) was inaugurated at Girijananda Chowdhury University, Assam. The initiative aims to provide a platform for young people to deepen their understanding of Russia and contribute to strengthening the longstanding friendship between India and Russia.

Prof. Kandarpa Das, Vice Chancellor of Girijananda Chowdhury University, presided over the programme. In his address, Prof. Das emphasised the important role of the younger generation in sustaining the tradition of people-to-people diplomacy between India and Russia. He said that the new generation should carry forward the legacy of people’s diplomacy built by earlier generations and develop it further through academic, cultural and youth exchanges.

Ratheesh C. Nair, Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Trivandrum attended the inauguration online as the Chief Guest. In his address, he stressed the importance of creating greater awareness among young people about the significance of Russia – India relations and their rich historical foundations. He observed that young Indians should understand how the decades-long partnership between the two countries has contributed to India’s development and international cooperation.

Dr Shrutidhara Hainari was elected President of the Assam State Chapter, while Ms Prachita Duara and Ms Charlene Mahalia were elected Secretaries.

The formation of the Assam State Chapter is part of the International Russophile Movement’s efforts to expand youth engagement in India and encourage greater interaction between Indian and Russian students, educational institutions and cultural organisations.

The executive committee decided organised events regularly for the promotion of Russian culture and literature also establish tie up with Russian universities.
