Recently Special Presidential Envoy Kirill Dmitriev, gave statements and views that make it seem as though the tunnel (or potentially bridge) between the USA and Russia is still a viable living project. There was even an agreement signing at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum regarding the project. The Zvezda TV channel reported the following on the issue:

Russia and the USA will sign an agreement on a tunnel across the Bering Strait tomorrow, Kirill Dmitriev told “Zvezda”. The countries will continue its design.

“Tomorrow we are signing an agreement that we are continuing the design of the tunnel. The tunnel will be built. It will be one of the major infrastructure projects between our countries,” said the head of RDIF.

Earlier, Dmitriev noted that the tunnel, which would connect Russia and Alaska across the Bering Strait, could be built in less than eight years, and its cost would not exceed $8 billion.

$8 Billion, actually seems like a reasonable price for what is debatably the most bold tunneling project in human history. Speaking for the Russian side we can say that the nation certainly does a lot of underground boring, including scale (The Moscow Metro) and under extremely difficult conditions (The St. Petersburg Metro) as well as engaging in mining on a massive scale.

After the a feasibility study is complete both parties will decide if they are going to put their chips down on this massive undertaking.
