On May 6, the Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Great Martyr George the Victorious.

The Great Martyr George the Victorious, a Roman military commander of the III-IV centuries, was born in Palestine. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, he openly confessed his faith in Christ, distributed property to the poor, and denounced the cruelty of his persecutors. After being tortured, he was beheaded in Nicomedia in 303.

He became famous for a posthumous miracle – a phenomenon on a white horse and the defeat of a serpent that ravaged the land near Beirut, which converted many local residents to Christianity. The relics of the saint are kept in the city of Lydda.
