October Day of Remembrance of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God

    Published on

October Day of Remembrance of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God” is a significant feast day in the Orthodox Christian Church, celebrated on October 26th (according to the modern Gregorian calendar) or October 13th (by the older Julian calendar). This day commemorates the arrival of a revered copy of the famous Iveron Icon to the city of Moscow in the 17th century.

The Origin of the Iveron Icon

The original Iveron Icon, also known as the “Panagia Portaitissa” or “The Gatekeeper,” is one of the most famous and ancient icons of the Virgin Mary. According to tradition, its history begins during the period of Iconoclasm in the 9th century, when a pious widow in the city of Nicaea saved the icon from destruction by soldiers. To preserve it, she set it adrift on the Mediterranean Sea.

Miraculously, the icon traveled across the water and, centuries later, arrived at the Holy Mount Athos in Greece, a monastic republic. The monks of the Iveron Monastery witnessed a pillar of light rising from the sea. When a monk named Gabriel walked on the water to retrieve the icon, it was brought ashore. After this, the icon is said to have miraculously moved to the gate of the monastery, choosing its own place. This is why it earned the name “The Gatekeeper.”

The Moscow Copy and Its Feast Day

In the 1640s, the archimandrite of the Iveron Monastery was visited by representatives of the Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. The Tsar requested a copy of the wonderworking icon for Russia. The Athonite monks celebrated a special service and, using holy water and ash, created an exact copy of the original.

This new icon was sent to Moscow, where it arrived on October 26, 1648. It was met with great solemnity and placed at the city’s entrance at the Resurrection Gate of Kitay-gorod. The icon became a major object of veneration for all of Moscow. To protect it from the elements, a special chapel was built at the gate, which became known as the Iveron Chapel. For centuries, Muscovites and visitors would pray before the icon before entering the city’s main square. The day of its arrival, October 26th, was established as its annual feast day.

    Significance and Veneration

The Iveron Icon is revered as a protector and intercessor. The Theotokos (Mother of God) is depicted in the icon type with a small wound on her right cheek, from which a drop of blood is often shown. This detail comes from the original story in Nicaea, reminding the faithful of the icon’s miraculous survival.

Believers pray before the Iveron Icon for comfort in sorrow, for the healing of physical and spiritual ailments, and for protection for their homes from enemies and misfortune. It is considered a guardian of homes and cities, faithfully watching over the faithful just as it watched over the gates of the Iveron Monastery and the city of Moscow.

Today, the celebration on October 26th is a day for Orthodox Christians to remember this history, to honor the Theotokos, and to seek her continued guidance and protection through her holy Iveron image.
