Surprisingly, countries from all over the “non-Communist” world, including Canada, Spain, Portugal and Morocco, could and did take part in it. The competition received its official name “Intervision” only in 1977. The idea was partially conceived as an alternative to Eurovision, but was not a direct copy of it: it was a pan-European event that promoted cooperation between East and West during a cultural and political thaw.
The contest ceased to exist with the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and Communism. After that point, Russia and other countries began to participate in Eurovision. However, in February 2022, the organizers banned Russia from participating in this musical competition. Furthermore, the yearly event had already become too LGBT “friendly” for many in Russia and became seen as a national shame on television for millions of Russian citizens.

Now countries, including Russia, are preparing to compete in a relaunched Intervision competition. Award-winning performer Yaroslav Dronov, known under the pseudonym “Shaman”, will represent Russia at the contest, which will be held on September 20th in Moscow.
In February 2025, Vladimir Putin issued a decree on the revival of Intervision. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko was appointed as the chairman of the organizing committee of the contest, while the supervisory board was appointed First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Sergei Kiriyenko.
The contest will be held on September 20th at the “Live Arena” in Moscow. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belarus, Brazil, China, Cuba, Egypt, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, UAE, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, South Africa have expressed their desire to participate in the competition. It is already known that Kyrgyzstan will be represented by the trio NOMAD.
Bolivia, Colombia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Hungary, Mexico, Serbia, Slovakia, and Venezuela could also take part in the contest and present their songs, according to the contest’s website. This should be an interesting event that will showcase talent that otherwise would not receive a global stage.
