The ceremony took place at Mandi House Square in the center of New Delhi.

New Delhi celebrated Russian Language Day with a flower-laying ceremony at the monument to Alexander Pushkin on Mandi House Square in central New Delhi. Russian House’s correspondent reports that several dozen people joined the event, including representatives of the Russian diplomatic corps, compatriots, well-known Indian Russian scholars and students studying Russian.

“We celebrate Russian Language Day and Pushkin Day in India every year. This event has already become a good tradition that attracts more and more people. I am glad to see that many guests have joined us today for the first time,” Sonu Saini, chairman of the Union of Russian Translators and associate professor at the Center for Russian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, told TASS.

According to him, “interest in the Russian language in India is growing rapidly.” “In the last 15 years, we have seen only an upward trend,” the Russian expert noted.

Saini stressed that the growing number of Indian migrant workers who seek to work in Russia has a great influence on these processes. “The need to learn Russian is growing. Accordingly, more and more teachers are needed. Many of our students are already starting to teach others,” the source said.

Russian Language Day is marked by the opening of an exhibition at the Russian House of the Indian capital dedicated to the influence of Pushkin’s work on other poets. There was also a conference with the participation of teachers and Russian scholars, students and experts, and an award ceremony for the winners of the translation competition. Students of the Russian language courses read Pushkin’s poems.

Russia’s Pushkin Day is celebrated on June 6. It was on this day (according to the new style) 226 years ago that Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born in Moscow. Every year, on the birthday of the great poet, Russian Language Day is celebrated in Russia and around the world.
