13% growth in cargo traffic has been reported along the Northern Sea Route. Ever since this concept was announced we all knew that this waterway would be a real game changer, but we can see that growth just keeps going. Even if the War in Iran had not started the North Sea Route would be successful, but with the Strait of Hormuz blocked it has become even more relevant.

▪️ 14.5 million tons, cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route, NSR, from January to May of the current year. Year-on-year growth amounted to 13%, said Alexey Chekunkov, head of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic.

▪️ In 2025, 37 million tons of cargo were transported along the NSR. A record for transit shipments was set, 3.2 million tons.

▪️ NSR infrastructure is actively developing: two new nuclear icebreakers have been commissioned, six emergency-rescue fleet vessels, two hydrographic fleet vessels have been modernized, and four satellites have been launched.

“We will continue implementing the plan, now in coordination with the comprehensive project for the development of the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor, which will be approved this year.” Alexey Chekunkov emphasized.
