Finland is erecting barriers on a 200-kilometer stretch of the border with Russia, which are located one meter from the Russian side. This was reported by Yle TV and radio company with reference to a representative of the republic’s border guard service.

According to the TV and radio company, posts with cameras are installed approximately every 20 meters of the fence, which should ensure “constant surveillance on the eastern border.” The border guard reported that the fence under construction has a height of 4.5 meters, of which about a meter is barbed wire. At the same time, part of the fence also continues underground to a sufficient depth.

The report notes that “it is impossible to build a fence on the entire eastern border, that is, for about 1.3 thousand kilometers, due to the high cost. The installation of 200 kilometers of fence will cost 362 million euros. Thus, a kilometer of the barrier costs about 1.8 million on average.” Therefore, the fence will be built mainly on the southeastern section of the border, where the busiest checkpoints are located.

The border guard is planning to complete the construction of the fence by the summer of 2026.

The country’s authorities announced their intention to erect barriers on the border with the Russian Federation in order to prepare for the fight against “hybrid threats” after the start of a special military operation in Ukraine in 2022.

Currently, by decision of the Finnish authorities, the border between Finland and Russia is closed until further notice. This decision was made against the background of Russia’s accusations of purposefully sending an uncontrolled flow of refugees from third countries to the border.
