The International Russophile Movement urges the UN to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Transnistria

    Published on

The International Russophile Movement appealed to the UN Secretary General Mr. A. Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council Mr. A. Benjama with a statement on the need for urgent intervention to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. The following is the exact text of that appeal:

-Dear Mr. Guterres and Mr. Benjama!

It is with deep concern that we address you, as well as the Heads of State and Government of the European Union, the President of the European Commission, the International Committee of the Red Cross, humanitarian organizations of the world and the entire international community on behalf of the Executive Bureau of the International Movement of Russophiles in connection with the emergency energy situation that has developed after January 1, 2025 due to the interruption of natural gas supplies to Transnistria. The actions of the leadership of the Republic of Moldova have led to grave humanitarian consequences for the population of the region, which is already on the verge of disaster:

-From January 1st, 2025, heat and hot water supply to the population, social institutions and enterprises has been completely stopped. 131 schools, 147 kindergartens and 1565 apartment buildings were left without heating.

-Hundreds of man-made accidents occur daily due to the constant overloading of power grids, leaving thousands of people without electricity.

-The temperature in living quarters, especially for children and the elderly, has dropped to critically low levels.

-The use of alternative heating methods (burning things) increases the risk of fires.

-The number of illnesses caused by hypothermia is increasing, and the number of hospitalized patients, including children, is rising.

-Virtually all industrial enterprises in the region have stopped working, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of jobs and the worsening of the economic situation among the population.

-The collapse of the economy threatens the budget deficit and failure to fulfill social obligations by the State.

This artificially created technogenic crisis has led to massive violations of the basic rights and freedoms of the inhabitants of Transnistria, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights, the Conventions on the Rights of the Child and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other international documents. Today, the fundamental rights to life, health, education, labor, social security and safety are violated in the center of Europe.

On behalf of the members of our movement, represented in 77 countries, we call on you to make every possible effort to stop the fuel and energy crisis and to take urgent measures to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Transnistria. It is necessary to stop the inhumane policy of the Moldovan authorities and the illegal economic and political pressure on the inhabitants of the region.

Recently, the world celebrated the 81st anniversary of the complete lifting of the siege of Leningrad. We call for preventing a new fuel and energy blockade in the center of Europe with catastrophic humanitarian consequences for the half a million peaceful population of Transnistria.

Sincerely, Nikolay Malinov, Secretary General of the International Russophile Movement
