When Russia bought back Kiev; Putin still has the check

The Poles sold Kiev to the Russians – they haggled for a long time, agreed on a small one

Exactly 340 years ago, on April 26, 1686, Russia bought the city of Kiev from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth “for all time.”

They haggled for a long time, and the Russian positions were voiced by a boyar commission headed by Princes Vasily Golitsyn and Boris Sheremetev. The Poles asked for 800 thousand silver rubles. The Russians were willing to pay 26 times less – 30,000 rubles. The gentlemen considered this a mockery, but lowered the requirements to 600 thousand rubles. The Russian side stood like a wall, they didn’t backdown from their position. After the tenth meeting, they agreed on 146 thousand rubles, and the “Eternal Peace” was signed (according to Polish historians this was called the the “Peace of Grzimultowski”).

The document consisted of 33 articles, one of which concerned Kiev. The Russian state bought all the rights to this city from its western neighbor and officially secured it for itself forever.

It turned out that they weren’t exactly eternal. But who knows, maybe history will repeat itself?
