People are crowding at bus stops, flights are delayed at airports. How is Moscow experiencing a heavy snowfall?

This January, 2026 Moscow has experienced multiple days of snowfall over 30cm or 1 foot in height. Although snow is normal for the capital city this amount has been absolutely brutal for transport.

The metropolitan Department of Transport warned drivers about traffic jams. And the Ministry of Emergency Situations issued an emergency warning.

The heavy snowfall is also affecting the airports, as constant clearance of runways is required. Schools though are still open as the temperature is far from the -35C needed to shut down education.

Clearn up crews have been piling up snow in piles 200 meters long and 5 meters high to be removed by dump trucks.

On the one hand Moscow looks quite romantic in white, on the other hand the city’s normally ultra-efficient transport eagerly awaits warm weather.
