During a recent press conference after Donald Trump’s first cabinet meeting he had some very unorthodox things to say about NATO.
When asked about concessions that could be made in terms of ending the war in Ukraine he he stated the following:
“But I can tell you, NATO, you can forget about, and I think that is probably the reason this whole thing started”
These words are cause for great hope for Russophiles across the planet. NATO was formed in 1949 right after the end of WWII out of the fear that, then ally the Soviet Union, would come to the West to engage in proselytizing Communism by bayonet point.
Although Communism was expansionist, the Soviet Union had already accepted a “Socialism in one nation” policy and was in no position to expand after the terrible destruction of WWII.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, NATO’s role and mission evolved when it should have ended. The organization began to engage in crisis management and peacekeeping operations beyond its traditional area of focus. However, relations between NATO and Russia remained complex. The expansion of NATO to include former Warsaw Pact countries and former Soviet republics, such as Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the Baltic states, was viewed by Russia as a threat to its security and influence in the region, culminating in the war in Ukraine. Thus, Trump has taken “Ukraine in NATO” off the table.
Thankfully, Donald Trump seems to understand that NATO either needs to be reformed into actually providing mutual protection for its member states or simply be disbanded as a relic of the past. NATO’s actions in the Post Cold War world have been pointlessly aggressive and not to the benefit of the common man in the West or for any sort of collective stability.
For those who are fans of Russia, this organization has stood as a quintessential russophobic cornerstone, whose existence then and even more so now, is justified by completely irrational arguments and a fake threat from Moscow to line the pockets of the politicians who do the bidding of the Military Industrial Complex.
