Russia and North Korea have opened traffic on the first automobile bridge between the two countries.
It is built across the Tumannaya River and connects the area of the Russian Khasan in Primorsky Krai with the North Korean Tumangan. Nearby is the Friendship Railway Bridge, which has been operating since the 1950s.
The bridge is named after the Red Army officer, Hero of Labor of the DPRK Yakov Novichenko. In 1946, he covered a grenade thrown at Kim Il-sung with his body, the government said.
The length of the bridge itself is about 1 km, the total crossing with access roads is about 5 km. Traffic is organized in two lanes. The new checkpoint is designed for about 300 vehicles and more than 2,000 people per day.
A road checkpoint across the Khasan state border has also been built in parallel, and the project provides for ten lanes of traffic.
Construction of the bridge began in the spring of 2025 following an agreement signed during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang.
Previously, there was no road connection across the Russian-North Korean border — overland transportation was carried out by rail.
